It's a drunken orgy,oh my god and it's allowed....apparently Lafayette is the place to go and see the real meaning of how Mardi Gras should be celebrated...that's according to what an old timer told me.

@Starlight13 : Been to both! Lafayette is much more family oriented. I grew up in New Orleans and it wasn't as crazy till about the late 70s. We were dress up and go in costumes and have so much fun. We always like the weeks leading up to it and hesitated about going on Mardi Gras day because of the crowds.

@cabeuser :
I am sure it was wonderful once in New Orleans, It was really vulgar when I went, men exposed walking etc.. girls were just the same, pretty bad, the worse it got the more the crowds cheered, shame..
New Orleans has such a rich culture like no where else in the USA, wonderful old souls ..I would hate people to experience Mardi Gras and think that's it !

@Starlight13 : It was wonderful. There are still good times if you know where to go and nowhere to stay away from. I would never go down Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras day anymore. New Orleans is wonderful and has so much history.

I loved a lot of the food,crawfish had to be shelled into a dish before I would eat it lol ...I still love red beans and rice,I don't eat it with sausage anymore,but I did love the sausage in the good old days of eating ....Gumbo was great to...so were collard greens....I would say Louisiana has the best every day food in the USA that's not junk like the rest of the country...good down to earth food from nature...and they love to share food with you there,wonderful characters.

@Starlight13 : I just do not like the spices. I think we ate fish when we went but so long ago I do not remember. We went on a riverboat ride which was a lot of fun, ate beignets at Café Du Monde which I loved. Toured a bunch of beautiful old plantations in the country somewhere which was awesome!!! Cannot even remember where exactly. I did like the meat pies as far as the food goes though.

We stayed at Hotel Monteleone and ate at the restaurant across the street, cannot remember the name would have to google. This must have been around the mid 90's. The streets smelled like trash though and we thought that was really gross.
