Air BNB
Has anyone used one? Any suggestions? I'm debating on trying one for the first time and get a little hesitant in booking but I've heard a lot of good things. SOooooo...any thoughts/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

@iamgr8 :

I am paranoid lol so for me I would never stay in one, some people have had cameras peeking at them, I wouldn't know who has a copy of the key... plus I like room service and stick to really good hotels... however so many people have had wonderful experiences, look at the reviews if they have a ton of positive ones you will be fine.. good luck 🌺

@iamgr8 : We have used them several times. We just did one in California and have used it in New Orleans also. My kids use it also. Do not book a bedroom in someone's home... make sure the area is safe, look up past reviews.

We don't travel anymore, but when we did (in the old days) we stayed at Bed and Breakfasts and hotels. So I am out of touch. We stayed in some castles in France and I am positive one was haunted (although it was not advertised to be). I think it was built in 1600.

Thanks everyone! I get really paranoid after hearing about the hidden cameras people have found. I have seen some fabulous reviews and prices in a couple of the places I want to visit but ugh, I just don't know. I guess I'll have to try it once to say I've done it and to actually see how it goes.

Two things you need: a camera detector that can find all hidden cameras and microphones, and a couple of cans of bug foggers (to kill bed bugs).

Now you are ready to go...

Yes, there are professional ones and cheaper ones. I think there are even apps for your phone. You can read some reviews to make sure they work.

Every year, my cousins and I rent an AirBnb or a VRBO home for our "Cousins Retreat*. We've never had anything scary or weird happen. When renting from these sites you are usually dealing directly with the owners, so there is a vested interest in making sure you are happy. Do you want to do your own cooking? Do you like having a spacious *home away"? All the tips are great. Be sure to read the reviews and believe them! If most of the reviews are bad, avoid it! Talk to the leasor.
Get a feel for their attitude. We like this type rental because we can bring our own food, workout without having to go to a gym full of strangers, and the locations are usually close to the activities, but still quiet and safe. Hope you have a good vacay!

@CSL3407 : thank you so much!! I love cooking and actually prefer doing that instead of paying for food I may not even like. Plus I like the idea of having more room to move around than a hotel room

We used AirBNB to rent a beach house in Rockport this labor day weekend. It's a brand new house so everything is good.
The only thing we may need to check next time is cookware in the kitchen: they may not have everything you need. So ask them to take a picture of whatever they have, then bring in whatever is missing. If you don't ask, most people will only show you the cabinets and will not show you what is inside. This house we rent doesn't even have a cutting board.

Some co-workers and I (about 6 of us) did an Air BnB in Austin for the weekend. We had no issues. The couple that owned the home had another home next door that they were staying in, so they were close if any issues were to arise. Just do a little research on the area as you will be leaving your vehicle in the open (not a parking garage...but no parking fee). A lot less expensive!
